Laweh Open University College is the first accredited Open University in Ghana and the second in West Africa. The University was established in 2014 as an open supported learning institution to offer certificates, diplomas, degrees and postgraduate qualifications. Laweh Open University, pledges to offer unparalleled flexible online and blended education for students in Ghana and beyond with a vision to transform Ghana into a higher education-hub within the West African sub-region and beyond through its flexible offerings. The University is currently the West African Representative Office for the African Council for Distance Education (ACDE). The university currently offers both undergraduate and graduate programmes, though blended and online deliveries. With students from Ghana, Nigeria, Togo and Ivory Coast, the university is poised to become a digital and technology education hub of West Africa and model for business incubation in higher education in Africa. Collaborative Partners LAWEH’s global partners include the Tanzania Open University, FVTech Canada, UnivcrsitaTelematicaInternazionaleUninettuno, (UNINETTENO) Rome, Italy, the Open University of China, Shanghai, Beijing China, Deutsche AkademiefürDigitaleBildung, Berlin, Germany (DADB) (German Academy of Digital Education) Laweh is currently a case study of open and distance learning in Africa in an international project spearheaded by the Open University of China. The project is to produce a book, which will be published by the China Central Radio & TV University Press (CCRTVUP), Beijing by the end of 2018. The book will have book English and Chinese Versions. Laweh was selected to host ACDE’s 6th Conference and General Assembly slated to take place in 2020. At the 5th Conference and General Assembly, hosted by the Open University of Sudan, Khartoum, March 6-9, 2017. In line with its vision to lead Open University evolution in Ghana and West Africa, Laweh was host to a delegation of about 70 participants from the Association of African Universities -AAU’s Conference on Teaching and Learning Technologies on November 23, 2017. The delegation drawn from various Ghanaian tertiary institutions were resented with demonstration of the Laweh Open University Learning Management System and digital Library. Though young, LAWEH’s modest achievements provide evidence of its resolve to lead distinctively and shape higher education in a digital age in West African. Strategic Research 3. Community Service and Development 4. Publication of Academic Journals 5. Media Publishing Services. Work with academics to generate learning resources, including e-resources. 6. Collaborative project management. Support the genesis and delivery of collaborations between its members, particularly those involving the sharing of learning resources. 7. Study Centre System. Establish a functioning centre that can support other study Centers regionally. This would involve seeking access to existing networks and identifying new locations. LAWEH shall explore opportunities for working with the private sector and other interested parties to provide computer labs and e-assessment centres. 8. Professional Development of OSL staff. LAWEH shall serve as a capacity building centre for ODL in Ghana. A Centre of Excellence/Academy involving international partners to provide a mechanism for the achievement of international standards of excellence. 9. Generic OSL brand promotion. LAWEH will contribute to the efforts in promoting and Open and distance learning in Ghana and the region.
